A Message from Our Chair
In light of questions posed recently about a sensitive issue faced by Carroll Education Foundation, involving a former employee prior to 2015, I want to share what I can while being mindful of our responsibilities about privacy even while operating in an open and transparent manner. We greatly appreciate and want to respect the trust placed in us by donors and our community.
In Carroll Education Foundation’s tax year 2015, CEF discovered and appropriately disclosed a diversion of assets by an employee for personal purposes. CEF retained outside legal counsel to advise and guide the organization and the board through the situation and to address and minimize the financial impact to the foundation and its mission. The individual then under review was not a CEF board member nor was the individual employed by Carroll ISD. (Currently, the individual is not associated in any way with CEF.) CEF immediately increased financial governance and protocols to ensure no similar incidents occurred thereafter. The assets of CEF are used exclusively to achieve its mission, a mission that fortunately was unaffected by the situation.
Does this event from the past affect CEF currently? Yes, in that our response to the incident has shaped the organization that we are today, in 2020. Our processes, our controls, and our business practices are all improved – more innovative, tighter, and multi-layered. Because of the incident, we are now less vulnerable and more resilient than in the past. CEF continues to work towards improving our communications, too, with the goal of increased transparency. We have also transformed our fundraising model, with an annual campaign and significantly larger donations.
Over the past two years, we have awarded nearly $1,000,000 in donations and scholarships – thanks to your investment in your students and their teachers. What has not changed is our unwavering commitment to ensuring excellence in education for all students in CISD. Please join me in helping us continue our important work to fund teachers and support CISD students and alumni.
